Why I Am Asking For Your Vote

January 7, 2022

My name is April Rivera, and I am running for Fort Zumwalt school board.  I am a mother of two sons who are currently attending elementary school in the district. My wife and I have been together for 17 years. She is a Fort Zumwalt alum as well as an Army Veteran. Before we had children I worked in medical billing, but we decided to raise our children ourselves instead of using childcare, so I left the work force to manage our home and children.
When the boys were 3 and 5 my wife was offered the opportunity to be a Regional Manager in Puerto Rico. We lived there for 2 years and then moved to south Florida. Living in Puerto Rico allowed me to see what private schools were like compared to public schools back home. I have always been an advocate for public schools because I am a product of one and I believe it is the best way for society to strive. Growing up with the neighborhood kids and teachers build strong familiar communities. I believe these are the best communities. I am still an advocate for public schools especially since one of my children was excluded from a private school because he had some special needs that they were unwilling to accommodate. When we moved to South Florida we were heavily involved in our children’s elementary school. I was an executive member of the PTO and the School Advisory Forum (SAF) Chairperson for the South Area Advisory Council (SAAC).
After several years of living away we decided to return home to raise our children near our families. Having already lived in the Fort Zumwalt School District and experiencing life outside of it, we specifically moved back into the district.
We have had a wonderful experience in the school district so far. I am currently a St. Charles County Election Judge Supervisor and have returned to school the get my degree in Public Policy and Public service. I am running because I can no longer just complain about issues that are important to us all, I need to help find solutions. I cannot think of a better way to help improve our community than by volunteering my time to help improve the policies of the Fort Zumwalt School District. This is why I am asking that you vote for me, April Rivera, this April 5th, 2022.
